About Bou Inania Madrasa
The establishing of this historical place backs to the time of Merenid in Fez as it was famous for its great role in spreading Islam in the region of Fez. Yes, it is Medersa Bou Inania in Fez with its beautiful Zellij, carved plaster, well designed cedar and massive brass entrance doors. It is the only Medersa in Fez with one minaret.
It took the Merinid Sultan Abu Inan Faris five years to Build this fabulous Quranic school and finish the construction in 1356 A.D to function as an educational institute and a mosque at the same time. Now, it stands as one of the most important stances of Merinid architecture in the world with a unique spirit and style from its counterparts in Marrakesh and Meknès.
Although it shares the same name with the school of Meknes and Marrakech, it stands unique with its style and the cost of its construction. The interior design as well as the exterior of this place is quite basic and simple but essentially similar to the one of the wealthier Fassi houses and riads.
The splendid interior design of this place is divided between three main parts plus its main entrance with fabulous effect of the mass of decoration, and the light and space held within. As you enter the main courtyard, you will notice the presence of the Andalusian architecture on the design of entrance chamber. While you are wondering which part you should visit first, you can see that the prayer hall is divided from the main body of the school by small water canal. From your position, you can notice the existence of stairs to the upper floor of the student cells (dorm).
